The castle

In the mid-15th century the Baner family commissioned the magnificent baroque castle we see today. During the 19th and 20th centuries the castle underwent two major restorations.

The castle’s oldest part, the tower, was built in the 1450s. Erik XIV was assassinated by poisoning in this tower on 26 February 1577.
